The Department of Education and Science states the mission of Transition Year is to promote the personal, social, educational and vocational development of pupils and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative, and responsible members of society. The department also sets out the following independent yet interrelated aims for Transition Year
- Education for maturity with the emphasis on personal development including social awareness and increased social competence.
- The promotAion of general, technical and academic skills with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and self- directed learning.
- Education through experience of adult and working life as a basis for personal development and maturity.
At Wilson 's Hospital School we aim to live up to the Department's aims. Our Transition Year is a full and rewarding year for all the students and we believe they are better academically, socially and personally for completing the year.
During the year students continue to progress in their core subjects such as English, Irish, mathematics, French/German/Spanish, geography, guidance and religious education. There is also an opportunity to experience new Leaving Certificate subjects on a modular basis. This allows for a more informed subject choice before the Leaving Cert. cycle begins. Other modules can include ECDL course. European Association of Teachers geography exam, Irish Red Cross First Aid, Agricultural Science, Music, Food Hygiene, Classical Studies, Environmental Studies, Home Economics, History, Art, Development Studies, Technical Graphics and Physical Education.
The students also operate mini-companies throughout the year. Other highlights include an overnight trip to Delphi Outdoor Education Centre and an opportunity to make a T.V. magazine programme at Kairos studios in Maynooth.
