Wilson's Hospital School

Library

School Library.

The library here is in the process of re-development and work is well underway. The Student Council, Parents’ council, OpenMinds and our School Librarians have been working hard since the beginning of the year to provide a space for the students to avail of for reading and learning. The aim of our library is to promote reading for pleasure, to support the curriculum and to enable independent learning.

Promoting reading for pleasure:

We believe that fostering a love for reading is key to unlocking a world of imagination, creativity, and lifelong learning. Reading for pleasure not only enhances literacy and vocabulary but also builds empathy, critical thinking, and emotional well-being. Whether diving into the pages of a gripping novel, exploring new ideas in non-fiction, or discovering diverse voices and perspectives, reading helps students develop confidence and curiosity. By promoting reading for enjoyment, we empower our students to grow as learners and as individuals, ready to embrace the endless opportunities a good book can offer.

Supporting the curriculum:

Reading plays a vital role in fostering lifelong learning and is central to achieving the goals of the Irish curriculum. It enhances literacy skills, expands vocabulary, and strengthens comprehension across subjects. By engaging with a wide range of texts, students develop critical thinking, creativity, and cultural awareness, aligning with the curriculum's emphasis on holistic education. Encouraging a love for reading also supports Gaeilge and English language development, helping students excel in communication while exploring Ireland’s rich literary heritage. Together, we can empower every student to reach their full potential through the joy of reading.

Enabling independent learning:

Reading is the cornerstone of independent learning, empowering students to explore new ideas, gain knowledge, and develop critical thinking skills. Through reading, students cultivate curiosity and the ability to research topics of interest, enabling them to confidently tackle challenges and solve problems. Whether diving into fiction or exploring informational texts, reading fosters creativity, broadens perspectives, and builds the foundational skills essential for lifelong learning. At our school, we encourage a love of reading to equip students with the tools they need to thrive in a knowledge-driven world.
