Principal's Welcome
In 1724, Andrew Wilson, a prominent local merchant, stated that in the event of there being no direct male heirs to his estate that it, and all its profits, be transferred to the Church of Ireland hierarchy and used to build a hospital for aged Protestant men and a school for poor Protestant boys. And so it came to pass.
Designed by John Pentland and opened in 1761, Wilson’s Hospital School is, to this day, a place where true love of knowledge makes all study a discovery and joy. Our school maintains a distinctive Church of Ireland ethos, fostering Christian practice and teaching, promoting dignity and respect for the individual and committed to the provision of a caring family atmosphere in which education can flourish.
As only the 15th Warden and Principal since the school’s inception, I am deeply aware of the school’s history, but also hugely confident in its future. Being a Diocesan school, we too work Together in God’s Love Transforming Lives.
Wilson’s is an inclusive, co-educational day and boarding school and serves the needs of all who come to be educated here. As Principal, distributed school leadership, planning, curriculum and assessment reform, restorative practice, learner empowerment, student-voice, and the building of communities of practice will be put to the fore.
With inclusion and diversity at the heart of what we do, Wilson’s Hospital School will work in partnership with students, teachers, parents and the wider community to co-create a school culture based on the principles of:
- Compassion
- Personal responsibility
- Ambition
Our committed teaching and ancillary staff espouse Andrew Wilson’s vision of loyalty and devotion to those they serve. As a school community, we are bound to speak through our deeds more than our words – Res Non Verba – and it is our mission to send those who graduate from our school to join the many thousands of other Old Wilsonians around the world with the ideal and power of service given to us in Christ, as expressed in a school with a vibrant and progressive outlook.
You are most welcome to arrange a personal visit to the school. I will be pleased to greet you and show you what Wilson's Hospital School has to offer.
